Sharjah eGovernment to consolidate all IT infrastructure for public sector

Sharjah eGovernment showcased its accomplishments in developing the IT infrastructure for the entirety of Sharjah's Government during GITEX Technology Week, clarifying past and future milestones on this path towards leaner and more effective eservices, in accordance to vision and direction given by of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Noor Al-Noman, Director of eGovernment department, said that: "The department has worked throughout 2014 in order to develop the Sharjah eGovernment Portal. The result is a single marketplace for all information about transactions that could be required of individuals and organizations domiciled in Sharjah".


Al-Noman added that: "Scalability is one of the most useful aspects of ICT, it allows us to respond to new needs as various departments grow. This is why eGovernment decided to converge all IT infrastructure within the entirety of Sharjah’s Government, be it on the client-facing side or for internal uses of the administration". She announced that the department intends to build an ISO-standard modular data center, in the presence of high-ranking officials and the C-suite of Altron, the company chosen to execute the project.

Al-Noman also clarified that the convergence will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will be providing more than 200 virtual servers for each department, hosting the data necessary to run its most commonly needed services such as website, application, or email service. The next ambitious phase will be for the department to start providing software as a service, as any fully fledged IT provider, for all other departments of Sharjah Government.

Sharjah International Airport launches revamped website at GITEX

Sharjah International Airport unveiled its revamped website at GITEX Technology Week 2014. HE Ali Salem Al-Madfaa, Chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority, declared that: "The Authority's participation in GITEX Technology Week under the platform provided by the departments of Sharjah Government proves how keen we are to participate in major events and to coordinate with partners across the board, in order to showcase the latest services we provide for the public".

His Excellency added: "GITEX Technology Week is a perfect gateway to discover the latest technology, exchange ideas, and pick up best practices. It is also a unique opportunity to communicate with the public. Competitiveness in our field is requiring a constant simplification of processes and providing users with cutting-edge technology to speed up transactions. Sharjah International Airport keeps updating itself with innovations in order to enhance customer satisfaction and raise awareness of its various services".

Launching the revamped www.sharjahairport.ae is an important step to give users an enhanced web experience. The website aims at giving simpler access to information for travelers and businesses, regarding flights, general information, and services provided by the airport. Special features include 24/7 flight monitoring and tracking and detailed maps of the airport to make the most of its numerous services, areas, and facilities.

The website also has an eVisa application system: companies can submit visa applications and follow their status online. They can also request VIP services for special travelers who wish to see their travel procedures simplified. Vendors can also use the ePurchases section to enter their information, or to follow news about airport-related tenders.

New Tourism Portal 'Sharjah My Destination' and Interactive Touchscreen App Unveiled at GITEX

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority unveiled its new tourism portal, Sharjah My Destination, as well as an interactive touchscreen application at GITEX Technology Week 2014. Speaking about the new website, www.sharjahmydestination.ae , HE Mohamed Ali Al-Noman, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority emphasized that a great deal of effort, planning and research has gone into envisioning and executing the new website.

"Our efforts have been aimed at making the new tourism portal truly user-friendly, interactive and fun. It will capture life in Sharjah and celebrate its uniqueness as the Capital of Arab and Islamic Culture and a global tourism destination with a difference," said the SCTDA Chairman.

Al-Noman said that the visitors to the new website will find it very useful in getting a feel of and insight into Sharjah as a tourism and investment destination as well as the cultural, educational and industrial hub that it has been for decades.

"The new site not just showcases Sharjah's numerous tourist attractions, its museums, mosques, various international festivals, universities, hotels, restaurants, it creates a virtual Sharjah experience offering an essential guide to living, experiencing and investing in this beautiful emirate. From basic tips such as 'Planning Your Trip, Getting There and Getting Around' to Where to Stay, Explore Sharjah, Invest in Sharjah, Work in Sharjah' every essential aspect has been covered," he said. "The new portal offers all the information and statistics you need to know and understand Sharjah, including its climate, rich culture, history, selection of events and festivals, natural resources, accommodation options and investment, leisure and shopping opportunities."

Al-Noman said that the new tourism portal, Sharjah My Destination will be immensely useful to both new visitors and investors every step of the way. The portal also offers a 'Contact Us' option enabling site visitors and guests to offer their feedback, seek help or share experiences.

Talking about the much awaited Sharjah Interactive Touchscreen App, Al-Noman hoped it will be received well by international visitors, investors and residents. Following the same concept, principle and pattern as the new Sharjah My Destination portal, the Interactive Touchscreen App opens a whole new world of experience to visitors, investors and residents, putting everything you need to know about Sharjah at your fingertips. "The visitors can explore Sharjah and all that there is to discover about this beautiful emirate of ours with the help of this Touchscreen Application- from shopping to leisure, heritage, history. to eating out," said Al-Noman. Moreover, the new application includes an interactive map for the Emirate of Sharjah that enables the user to explore the four main cities of the Emirate through a clear directory tool, he added.

Large touchscreen monitors will be placed all over Sharjah - at key government offices, tourist attractions and sites. The Touchscreen App is a great tool and invaluable gift for tourists and residents, said Al-Noman pointing out that the Touchscreen App will put the Sharjah experience at their fingertips. The Interactive Touchscreen App had been hugely successful when it was introduced at various international tourism exhibitions, he added. Al-Noman expressed his happiness that the new Sharjah website and Interactive Touchscreen App are being launched at a time when the Emirate is being celebrated as the Islamic Culture Capital for 2014 and is ready to be crowned the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2015.

It's worth mentioning that SCTDA has also launched a new corporate website, www.sharjahtourism.ae which is essentially a business-to-business platform and offers a peek into the Authority's corporate profile and its role as the brand ambassador of Sharjah, regulating body and leader of Sharjah's tourism and hospitality sector.

Sharjah Government organizes two sessions around sports and technology

Sharjah Government’s stand “Fountains of Pride” witnessed two intense panel discussions revolving around sports in the digital era during GITEX Technology Week 2014. The discussions were entitled “Sports and Technology” and “Sports and Smart Applications” respectively. Participants discussed the effects of social media on the sports industry, and how smart devices and applications can be used to train and develop athletic abilities.

The sessions were attended by HE Ahmed Nasser Al-Fardan, Secretary General of Sharjah Sports Council, Emirati football coach Abdul Rahman Al-Haddad, Nabil Ashoor, ex-director and former player of the national handball team, Mohammad Al-Kamali, General Coordinator of Al Shaab Club, Sharjah FC player Bader Abdulrahman, Emirati media personality Abdullah Bani Yas, and Hussein Al-Balushi Website Manager for Al Shaab Club. Sharjah TV sports anchor Ahmed Sultan moderated the session.

HE Ahmed Nasser Al-Fardan, Secretary General of Sharjah Sports Council, declared that: “The sports industry is one of the most challenging fields for applied sciences nowadays. Its ramifications made it necessary to find ways to help coaches and managers monitor all variables simultaneously, so the introduction of modern technology and smart applications to sports has become vital”.

Emirati football coach Abdul Rahman Al-Haddad pointed that providing training curricula adapted to the athletes’ age, fitness, skill and psychological profiles is a considerable task that requires highly technical capabilities and experience.

Nabil Ashoor, ex-director and former player of the national handball team, added that: “Any new tool need to be comprehensive, scalable, and easily implementable in order to be effective”.

Mohammad Al-Kamali, General Coordinator of Al Shaab Club, assured that: “ICT has greatly benefited Mankind in many aspects. Social Media platforms represent a new way to share information in the quickest way possible and the introduction of high-tech tools to training has become inevitable to be in line with the way developed nations prepare their athletes”. Sharjah FC player Bader Abdulrahman added: “ For a club to assimilate a large number of athletes, it faces a serious challenge to account for all the data surrounding them. This task requires a large data bank and smart applications for managers and coaches to process this information”.

Emirati media personality Abdullah Bani Yas highlighted “the need for clubs to be updated on the latest technology around the world, which was greatly facilitated by the Internet”; while Hussein Al-Balushi Website Manager for Al Shaab Club, explained how the Internet has made it possible for members of the public to interact and make their voices reach the sports industry.
